Let’s talk about drugs, guys.

No, but really. I can’t tell you how many people have come to see me for SIBO when they are still on the drugs that (probably) caused the SIBO. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)** are the easiest to pick on and they are the most well studied for this: Best Reference.

**Examples of PPIs include Omeprazole, Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid.

But there are other drugs that can cause SIBO, I think… They just haven’t been studied in this way yet. Or perhaps they don’t cause the SIBO, but they start the chain reaction that makes you take a PPI or other SIBO-causing drug. The example that comes to mind is statins (cholesterol lowering drugs).

Of course it’s worth noting that you can’t just go off of these drugs. PPIs are well known to cause rebound reflux that is oftentimes worse than your initial reflux and can last for months. This is why it’s important to work with somebody who knows how to manage and treat SIBO! I frequently work with my patients’ prescribing doctors to help them come off of drugs, when needed.

SIBO Mistake #4: Drugs

The good news is that it is possible to treat SIBO, and oftentimes that can be done naturally. Through a combination of dietary modifications (not low FODMAPs), exercises, and supplements, I have seen great progress be made with this notoriously hard to treat condition.

If you are ready to work with me on your SIBO, please download my e-book “Why conventional Medicine CAN’T Cure IBS” below. The application process to become a patient is discussed in the last pages of that book.
